Alexis Sanchez, Mesut Ozil and Santi Cazorla give Arsene Wenger his first win of the season
Arsenal beat Watford 3-1 to earn their first victory of the season thanks to goals from Santi Cazorla, Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil.
Neither side had got off to a great start to the season with one defeat and a draw from the opening two league matches but Arsenal’s excellent first-half performance got them the three points.
Santi Cazorla scored the first from the penalty spot, then Alexis Sanchez made it two after a fumbled effort and Mesut Ozil’s header gave the Gunners a 3-0 lead at half-time.
The good news for the Hornets was that substitute Roberto Pereyra scored on his debut, following his move from Juventus but it proved to only be a consolation for the hosts.
Walter Mazzarri’s side were much better in the second-half but the Italian has to wait for his first win as Watford manager.
After the game the Watford manager said: “The second half we were good and should have scored more.
“Cech played incredible for them, saved a goal two or three times but I am very happy with how our team played.
“A lot of players are new so we have to prepare later. The organisational things are still missing and two starting players were out last minute and this really didn’t help.”
Meanwhile a pleased Arsene Wenger said: “We had a good cushion at half-time. At the moment we are not completely there physically and could see that in the second half.
“Ozil is not physically there completely but what we want from Ozil is assists and goals and I hope he can get that this season, 10 or 15 goals plus the chances he creates.”
After the international break the Gunners host Southampton and Watford travel to East London to play West Ham.
