Jonathan Calleri signs for West Ham
Talented Argentine striker Jonathan Calleri has signed for West Ham on a season-long loan deal from Uruguyan club Deportivo Maldonado.
He is a talented forward who topped the 2015 Copa Libertadores scoring charts with Sao Paulo, and has also played for Boca Juniors.
The 22-year-old has already met his new team-mates and was trainign with them on Tuesday.
He now goes straight into Thursday’s squad for their tricky Europa League play-off first leg with Astra Giurgiu in Romania.
Talking to the club’s official website he said: “I am very happy to have signed for West Ham.”
Before adding: “This represents a fantastic new challenge for me and I am really looking forward to it.
“The Premier League is the best league in the world and so I am delighted to have this opportunity to play in such a prestigious league.”
Calleri is required following the the thigh injury suffered by Andre Ayew in Monday night’s 2-1 Premier League defeat at Chelsea. The Hammers’ club-record signing £20.5million Ayew hobbled off after little more than half an hour.
It forced Slaven Bilic to look for new blood especially as the striker will face scans to determine the extent of the injury.
West Ham are likely to continue looking for another more established forward, but the signing of Calleri will certainly ease Bilic’s striking options.
Sofiane Feghouli is still battling a hamstring problem which doesn’t help!
After the Hammers trip to Romania they host Bournemouth on Sunday then Astra Giurgiu and the last game beofre the transfer window closes is a difficult trip to Manchester to face City.
